Described by the BBC as a series that provides ALL the hallmarks of a great Victoria Wood comedy, Dinnerladies is enriched with a working class, poetic dialogue and empathetic affection for the most ordinary and dowdy of characters. Set only within a fictional kitchen and canteen in a Manchester factory, a group of ten members of staff, mostly female and middle-aged, expose their inner lives and thoughts about the human world. Bren (Victoria Wood) is the deputy manager, to whom many of the characters come for advice, despite the fact that she is riddled with self doubt as a result of a former unhappy marriage and a childhood in care. Her self-centered and delusional mother Petula Gardeno, played by Julie Walters pops in on occasion to steal the show. While it maintains its comic nature, story lines sometime follow the characters sadder lives – giving the show a bittersweet undertone and a warming endearment.
